Petrushka

These two paintings are a similar story. My 'original ideas' part of the early portfolio.
They were inspired by a brief I once did based around the Russian story of Petrushka. I think I wanted the poor guy to have a happier ending so he was re-imagined as 'Pete' and gained some new pals.

Alice In Wonderland

When I first finished University I was in a huge hurry to bolster my portfolio & I thought re-designing a few old classics would be a good way to show off my point of view. Like most of the work from this time I wish now that I'd slowed down and taken more care from the beginning.

I thought I had hit on a winner with my skinny Easter-Island-headed Queen- a fresh take that still honored the classic version- but now of course Tim Burton got there first and nobody is very impressed!

God Speeds The Plow

This was the piece that I did to prove to 'The People's Friend' magazine that I could adapt to their style. I still had areas improve (less jaundice!) but it did the trick & I got the job

Peter Pan details

I thought it might be a good idea to add a few close-up shots- show some interesting texture or detail that might not immediately jump out at you. Moreso especially for some of the things I'll be adding later but start as you mean to go on :) Click on thumbnails to enlarge.

& I do like the way this looks up close. I'd love to get it printed on some wallpaper one day, maybe mount a wall light over Tinkerbell's head....

First Post!

Hello all, the moment has come:

This Peter Pan painting seems like a logical place to start- I use it as the first page in my portfolio and he is one of my favourite pieces & I don't think its just because we look so much alike....

The piece was largely done in watercolour and watercolour pencil and is of indeterminate size- truthfully his head was one piece of A4 and his body another....the rest on various pieces of various sizes.
I used to do that with a larger piece for the most part out of terror that I would spill something on it! Hopefully when its all stitched together in Photoshop you can hardly tell.
